As parents, we all want to give our children a great childhood. Having adventurous is one of those things that perhaps we haven’t put a lot into action, but can be so important when you have children. The best memories are made from when we were children ourselves and being outdoors exploring and testing the limits! But as parents, we might need to aide our children in the best way possible. I have a few tips on how to keep your child’s creativity and imagination alive!

  1. Reading– As a fellow bookworm myself, there is no better adventure than opening up a book and getting inspired just by reading what’s on the page! Children of all ages can benefit from a daily read aloud, and as for my daughter, she loves being read three books before bed. Sometimes even during her naptime, she’ll put out a few of her favorites and start reading to her stuffed animals. Seeing the joy of reading and the excitement she gets out it is enough to know that she’s excited and ready to think of new places to visit!

  2. Allow Them To Be Creative– My daughter has a pretty wild imagination and certain things she says can be from past experiences or things she’s seen or read herself. Ordinary things from around the house became prompts in their imagination play as they lived out the adventures from the stories we were reading. We love going out in the backyard, grabbing whatever we can find (usually rocks and sticks) and pretending they are swords or our new walking stick for a long hike up a mountain.

  1. Teachable Moments– Of course taking the time to talk things out with your child is essential for them to learn right and wrong. For instance, knowing that it’s important to abide by the law when they get older like learning to drive or not ‘hurting anyone’ when they have their pretend weapons. What scares me is knowing that sometimes parents don’t talk to their children about this until it’s too late and they are left to deal with their child who may have been charged with a criminal offense! If that should ever happen to my children, I Know that the first person I’d call would be Glen Burns. Glen started his Law Office of Glen P Burns, over 15 years ago and offers various types of services for his clients. His experience and open door policy are key in making sure everyone that walks in and out his door is happy, understanding of the charges made against them and assured that he will do his best to keep you and your child as protected as possible. Using teachable moments such as this can help your child know that as great as it is to be playing and using our imagination, know that how we play with others and our actions can be consequential.

  2. Provide Them With Dress Up Clothes– Adventure starts in the mind. Providing your children with dress up clothes can give them hours of imaginary play, reenacting the stories that they listen to and fosters the love of adventure in their childhood that will provide many memories that will be cherished for years to come.Dress up clothes are not just the kind that you may get them at Halloween or for their birthday, but could also include clothes that you find at Goodwill stores. Some of my children’s favorite dress up clothes are made up of these kinds of things: women’s wool jackets (red and blue) to play scenes from the Revolutionary War or their favorite men from that era, sports pants that go along with the jackets to play more of the parts of those kind of uniforms, army clothes, western clothes and much more.

  3. Give Them Hours of Free Time Each Day– There is nothing more beneficial to raising adventurous children than to give them hours of free time each day to be adventurous. This is the time that the ideas that come from the other four ways can grow and flourish. Packing our children’s schedule with activities that rob them of these important hours of the day will ultimately hinder the ability for them to implement their adventurous ideas into their play, furthering their ability to be creative and grow in their imagination.

So now that I’ve shared a few ideas on how to raise an adventurous child, what about you? Is your child one that seems to be craving adventure, outdoor play or just your little ‘wild one’? What way will you incorporate their love for living on the edge and exploring?
